The Bumble Bees Barbarians won their International Mixed Ability England-Wales games, defeating Llanelli Warriors 29-24 after a very tough and close game.
The Bumbles were able to overturn a fierce opening ten minutes which saw the Warriors take a 12-0 lead. Bumbles players fought back scoring five tries with an unbowed Welsh side running in another two. In the end the Bumbles were able to respond to the home crowd cheers and lift the H-bomb Trophy.
Celebrations in the clubhouse at the Bradford and Bingley Ground continued in the afternoon as England had a successful outcome in the other England Wales competition at Twickenham.
Over two hundred spectators had gathered to witness the annual contest, among them Charlie Roberts (Yorkshire RFU 2015 World Cup Legacy Representative), Gerry Sutcliffe MP Bradford South and member of the Parliamentary Sports Committee, alongside Bradford and Bingley RFC president, Tony Rae, and chairman, Peter Rae. Rugby Development Officer and long term supporter and facilitator Hamish Pratt donned a Bumbles shirt for the second half.
Equally important was the composition of the spectators with rousing support for the Bumbles coming from the newest Mixed Ability team Halifax Magpies. Other people with Learning Disabilities from across the region gathered to cheer on the home side.
Delegations from Europe attended the event and took part in the Saturday training session and conference about the future of mixed ability rugby. All the Six Nations were represented, France by the national Federation of Sport Adapté, Chivasso Rugby for Italy and Tri International/The Clan for Scotland. Sundays Well RFC carried the Irish flag, while Swansea Gladiators and Llanelli Warriors shared the Welsh one.
The conference members agreed to progress their partnership with a view to forming a European Federation of Mixed Ability Club, to be presented next September in Saint Omer, France, in the presence of IRB president Bernard Lapasset.
The Bumbles would like to thank all the several people who made this weekend not only possible, but an absolute success: Llanelli Warriors, all the European delegations, RFU representatives, the referee, Peter Kearns, the Bumbles Steering Group and Bradford and Bingley Club.
See you next year in Wales!
